Dave Smith / Station Manager
Station Manager
Dave Smith is a founder member and managing director of SHCR and together with a small team of fellow radio enthusiasts is without doubt a driving force behind the success and ethos of SHCR.
Although Dave’s original vision was initially based around setting up a website to publicise local events and facilities within Mole Valley, the idea of radio was just too exciting and he was determined to make it work for the area.
He is a long standing, on-off presenter having done the weekday breakfast show, Saturday breakfast show, Something For The Weekend, Sounds of the 70s and most recently Dave Smith’s Prog Rock Story. Balancing his time to managing the entire radio and presenting shows often sees him do “seasons” of shows with a run of 4-6 weeks to suit him.
Dave’s musical influences go right back to the 60s with The Beatles, the Kinks and The Who then through the 70s and 80s with David Bowie, Deep Purple, Slade, Elton John and even some Punk from The Sex Pistols thrown in.
Who would he invite to the studio for a chat? It would have to be that working class hero John Lennon. It’s hardly surprising that if he could have gone to any concert it would have been a Beatles concert. Instead he made do with a second best concert in 1972 in Coventry with Deep Purple supported by Nazareth.
Despite Dave’s predilection for loud heavy rock music or the sophistication of prog rock he is equally at home wandering the beaches of the South Coast collecting seashells. His real passion is Leicester City Football Club. But sticking with the 60s Dave’s favourite film is the classic 1964 war film 633 Squadron with a bunch of fighter pilots battling against the odds. Bit like running a radio station!
