The Orpheus Centre

The Orpheus Centre is a specialist further education college tailored to young disabled adults which aims to inspire and empower students to live fulfilling, independent lives.
As well as providing a creative environment for students to discover the joys of the arts, the staff work hard to find suitable work experience placements to enhance their learning.
In 2023 we started a new partnership with the The Orpheus Centre. Surrey Hills Community Radio supported three students from The Orpheus Centre by providing a rewarding programme where the students created a range of radio content from adverts to interviews. A session was held once a week for 18 weeks (totalling 72 hours), training students resulting in nine radio shows.
During the time spent at SHCR we worked on technical skills, the power of our voices and used the full breadth of the English language to better our communication skills.
Their work experience diaries tracked their fast progress and their increased feeling of self-belief and inner confidence which shone through by the end of their time with us.
Listen to their final show with us, or listen again on MixCloud (just search for ‘The Charlie Jake Show’)
As a result of their hard work and dedication during their placements, they all gained the confidence to present their own radio show. The pictures show how much fun they had presenting their live shows at Surrey Hills Community Radio!
