Sundays, 12noon – 2pm
This week, I spoke to Matt Pinches from the Guildford Shakespeare Company, who told me all about their upcoming performance of Alice in Wonderland (13 Oct – 3 Nov 2018) – an immersive performance that takes place across various historical and magical locations in Guildford 150 years after Lewis Carroll first came to the city. If that hasn’t tempted you enough, they only have the Brian Blessed for an honorary patron, whose instantly recognisable voice stars in the production.
Starting at St Mary’s Church where Carroll preached, and where his funeral took place, audiences arrive for a church service led by the Reverend himself before tumbling down the rabbit hole with Alice. From here, they are led by characters to Guildford Museum where 10 rooms have been transformed into different parts of Wonderland for audiences to explore in their own time. Live action, CGI animation, puppetry and audio headsets all combine to create a unique and immersive experience. The finale takes place inside the ancient Castle Keep, home the fearsome Queen of Hearts, for the trial of the stolen jam tarts. (From GSC Press Release).
Following our brief dip into Wonderland, Matt and I discussed how local people are (and can get) involved in the company: from being the star of the show, to pulling the curtain rope or hanging promotional banners in your garden, there’s a job for everyone!
Lastly, we discussed GSC’s other projects, which include workshops for adults that help break down and demystify Shakespeare, as well as outreach programmes for disadvantaged schools, holiday clubs for budding, young thesps and production people, and work experience for any young’uns looking for a greater insight into the industry.
