Rick Qureshi from the Epsom Light Opera Company came in to the studio on Sunday 18th October to talk about ELOC’s upcoming production of Fiddler on the Roof. Simon on the Sunday Morning Madness Show had him pop in to give a quick run down on the history and background of the ELOC and to tell the Surrey Hills Radio listeners all about their production this week.
ELOC are a Surrey based, friendly and exciting, award winning amateur dramatic company who have been bringing a variety of musicals and operettas to the stage for 30 years. They perform twice a year (normally alternating between Musical and Operettas) at the Epsom Playhouse, and pride themselves on the high quality of the productions they bring to the stage. Recent shows have included; ‘Anything Goes’, ‘Orpheus in the Underworld’, ‘Follies’ and ‘Titanic’ and going much further into their back catalogue include shows like ‘Oklahoma’, ‘Kiss Me Kate’ and ‘The Mikado’. They have been the recipients of a National Operatic and Dramatic Association Regional Award for four years in a row, an achievement of which they are extremely proud. With a range of performers from young teenagers to the retired 70 year old, ELOC rehearse three times a week in local church and village halls and are always on the lookout for volunteers to work both backstage or to tread the boards! With high running costs to produce their shows, the more help the merrier! Whether your skills are in set design, costume, playing musical instruments or just wanting to be a helping hand to a local organisation, ELOC are always happy to have help from the local community.
Fiddler on the roof is a fun musical with both comedy and romance based on life in the little Russian village of Anatevka at the beginning of the twentieth century. With the traditional twists and turns of a musical and catchy musical numbers, this is a show not to be missed and one that promises to be a fun night out for all the family. Fiddler on the roof is on at the Epsom Playhouse every evening from the 20th – 24th October including a Saturday matinee.
